The Color of October
Friday Postcard 3 • Santa Fe, New Mexico
There are places you visit.
And then there are places that quietly become part of you.
For me, Santa Fe is the latter.
Every October, just as Texas begins to hint at cooler days, I find myself longing for crisp mountain mornings, the scent of piñon drifting through the air, and the golden cottonwoods that seem to glow against adobe walls.
It's not loud beauty.
It doesn't ask for attention.
It simply exists.
Santa Fe has a way of slowing your pace without asking permission.
You linger over breakfast a little longer.
You wander without looking at a map.
You find yourself taking streets simply because they're beautiful.
One of my favorite mornings always begins at Pasqual's.
The coffee arrives steaming while the city is still waking up.
Sunlight spills across colorful walls, conversations drift from nearby tables, and there is nowhere else I'd rather be.
Later, I'll lose myself along Canyon Road.
Not because I'm shopping for art.
Because every gallery feels like another invitation to pause.
Some doors open to breathtaking paintings.
Others open to hidden courtyards filled with aspens, sculptures, and quiet fountains.
Even if you buy nothing, you leave carrying something.
By afternoon, I usually find myself at the Santa Fe Farmers' Market.
Fresh chile peppers.
Local honey.
Wildflower bouquets.
The kind of place where you remember that food has seasons, and people still know the names of the farmers who grew it.
If the mountains are calling, Aspen Vista Trail is impossible to ignore.
In October, the aspens shimmer like they've been brushed with gold leaf.
Every breeze sends a few more leaves dancing across the trail.
For a little while, the entire forest feels alive.
Even dinner seems to slow down in Santa Fe.
Some evenings it's the warm comfort of La Choza, where generations of recipes are served without pretension.
Other nights call for Geronimo—an evening that reminds you that elegance doesn't have to feel formal.
Neither is better.
They simply fit different moods.
I've realized that's what I love most about Santa Fe.
It never tries to impress you.
It simply invites you to notice.
The light.
The colors.
The mountains.
The pace.
Maybe that's why I return every October.
Not because the city changes.
Because somehow...
it reminds me to.
