Just Down the Road
Friday Postcard 1• Chireno, Texas
Some of my favorite places will never appear on a "Top 10 Places to Visit" list.
They aren't famous. They don't have luxury hotels or long lines of tourists. Most people would drive right past without realizing there's something special waiting just beyond the next curve in the road.
Just outside my hometown in East Texas is a little community called Chireno.
Blink and you might miss it.
But for me, it's a reminder that the places we remember most aren't always the ones with the biggest attractions. Sometimes they're simply the places that make us feel at home.
Driving the back roads around Chireno has always felt different. The towering pine trees, quiet country churches, weathered fences, and front porches where neighbors still wave as you pass create the kind of landscape that encourages you to slow down.
Life doesn't seem to compete with itself there.
It simply unfolds.
When I think about where the idea for Postcards & Porch Swings began, it wasn't in a bustling city or on an unforgettable vacation. It began on roads much like these—where beauty isn't carefully curated; it's simply part of everyday life.
The older I get, the more I realize those places shaped me.
They taught me that slowing down isn't about doing less. It's about noticing more.
The way sunlight filters through the pine trees.
The sound of cicadas on a warm summer evening.
A porch swing moving gently in the breeze.
The smell of fresh-cut hay after an afternoon rain.
Those aren't just memories.
They're reminders.
This little corner of the internet is my way of sharing those reminders each Friday.
Some weeks we'll wander through charming small towns. Other weeks we'll discover beautiful homes, favorite recipes, hidden beaches, or unforgettable weekend escapes.
But it all begins here.
On a quiet East Texas road just outside Chireno.
And maybe that's the point.
Sometimes the most beautiful places aren't the ones everyone knows about.
They're the ones that quietly become part of who we are.
See you next Friday.
