Friday Postcard 11 • London on My Mind
There’s something about the week before a trip.
The suitcase isn't open yet.
The passport is still tucked away.
But somehow you've already started traveling.
Maybe it's hearing British accents on television and smiling because in a few days they won't feel so far away.
Or maybe it's simply noticing how your imagination quietly arrives before you do.
I've found myself looking at maps more than usual this week.
Tracing neighborhoods.
Wondering which café I'll accidentally discover.
Thinking less about famous landmarks and more about ordinary mornings.
Because those are usually the moments that stay with me.
A cup of coffee before the city fully wakes.
A walk down a street with no destination.
The sound of church bells echoing somewhere you can't quite see.
Travel has taught me that the places we remember most rarely come from an itinerary.
They're found in the unexpected conversation.
The tiny bookstore.
The park bench.
The neighborhood bakery with a line out the door.
It's funny how watching the World Cup in the USA has reminded me of that.
Millions of people arrive for ninety minutes of football.
But between the matches...
They discover cities.
They linger in pubs.
They wander markets.
They become temporary locals.
Maybe that's what I've been looking forward to most.
Not just seeing London.
Living there—even if only for a week.
And maybe that's the real gift of travel.
It reminds us that every place is someone's ordinary Tuesday.
There's something beautiful about getting to borrow it for a little while.
I'll be sending next week's postcard from across the Atlantic.

Friday Postcard 7 • A Quirky Octopus
I have a habit of buying books faster than I can finish them.
There's always a stack on my nightstand—some recommended by friends, some picked up because I loved the cover, and a few that somehow found their way into my shopping cart after reading just one review. Every now and then, one quietly rises to the top at exactly the right time.
It's funny how that happens.
Sometimes we reach for a book because we think we're looking for entertainment, only to realize we were looking for perspective all along.
There have been seasons in my life when I've needed adventure. Other times I've needed encouragement. Lately, I've found myself drawn to books that slow me down and remind me to notice the little things—the conversations around the dinner table, a walk through a new town, or the comfort of coming home after being away.
The best books have a way of staying with you long after you've turned the final page. They change how you notice the world.
Maybe that's why I love reading while traveling. A good story somehow becomes part of the place where you read it. Years later, I won't just remember the ending—I remember the porch, the coffee shop, or the rainy afternoon where I was when I finished it.
